3/4 was established in 1999 as the first magazine of its kind in Slovakia,
with the intention to map regularly the sphere of contemporary non-mainstream
literature, visual and performing arts, music, film, alternative theatre, etc.,
especially artists and events in the Central and Eastern Europe.
Starting as a bimonthly, since 2001 it has been published as a quarterly and its
content focuses more on the relationship/intersections between art of the 21st century,
science and up-to-date technology. The main aim is to link together communities with
different backgrounds but with an interest in culture, to explore new forms of
creativity, including new media culture and digital arts, subcultural phenomena,
electronic and experimental music, activism, issues of postmodern society and urban
life, etc. The editors and contributors want to bring new perspectives and information
about contemporary culture to the Slovak and Czech public.
The reader can find reports from European festivals, artistic exhibitions, concerts and
multimedia events corresponding to the above mentioned topics; interviews with artists,
presentations of interesting personalities/groups and their works in the field of
postmodern culture, expert essays on cyber- and pop- culture, and a section with
reviews of books, contemporary and experimental music records, films and web sites.
We are also offering several pages of the magazine for young Slovak and Czech artists
to create new works. We also translate relevant essays from foreign languages, which
are published in the "DIGESTOR" section.
Target group
The reading public is aimed at primarily young educated people, university students
or graduates with the interest in contemporary culture in both Slovak and Czech
Republics. Furthermore, one of the main goals of the publisher is to attract the
attention of the wide public, to enable people getting in touch with upcoming cultural trends.
Distribution
The magazine is offered in the bookshops, newspaper stands, film clubs, galleries and
universities in the cities of Slovakia and in selected bookshops in the Czech Republic.
We also run a subscription service, at this time working within Slovakia only. Occasionally
we sell 3/4 also on various cultural events (including presentations and multimedia
events prepared by the publisher itself).
